Fantasy Fest Key WestNon-stop fun and frolic October 21-30 – - this could only be Fantasy Fest in Key WestThis festival tops them all – we’ve gained world-wide Fantasy Fest fame after 30 years of uninhibited and lighthearted fun at this event.  The number of visitors grows each year and we now rival New Orleans’ Mardi Gras in the number of out-of-town visitors for Fantasy Fest.

The 2011 theme of “Aquatic Afrolic” will certainly bring out sinister seafarers and flashy fishes in Key West this year!  To give you a taste of some of the events scheduled for the Fest, the list includes: Wet & Wild Blue Party; Underseas Odyssey Headdress Ball; Southernmost Sirens, Sea Nymphs, and Sailors Costume Contest; and Friends of Fort Taylor’s Vampire Ball.  A full schedule of events is available at FantasyFest.net.

The coronation of our 2011 Key West Fantasy Fest king and queen kicks off the 10 days of fun.  They will be crowned at the Coronation Ball on Friday, October 21 held in the “Lost City of Atlantis” in the Southernmost Cafe’.  Our royals are actually crowned on their fund-raising ability.  Candidates raise money to benefit AIDS Help during a competition period preceding Fantasy Fest. The king and queen selected are the individudals in each category who raised the most money.  I’ve always said that Key West gets the gold medal for combining fun and fundraising!

Fantasy Fest began 30 years ago in Key West as an idea to bring in revenue during October, which was the slowest tourism month.  Now Halloween is our busiest day of the year and October’s Fantasy Fest brings in the most revenue of any week in the year!  Duval Street becomes the stage for vendors selling arts, crafts, food, drinks, and costumes.  Here’s a peek at one of last years parades to give you a preview of the fun that October now brings.
